Preparations for possible flood
- Determine whether your home is located in a flood-prone area.
- Secure your home: close low openings and, if necessary, place sandbags to block water. Remove items from the yard that could be carried away by floodwaters.
- Elevate items from the ground that could be damaged or cause contamination (for example, chemicals, fuel).
- If water begins to enter the building, turn off electricity. Monitor water levels in the sea and inland water bodies.
In case of a flood risk
- Follow the situation via official channels and adhere to the given instructions.
- If you know your home may be submerged, prepare to evacuate early. Do not forget pets!
- Pack necessary items: documents, medications, food, drinking water, torch, blankets.
During a flood
- Stay indoors. If water enters the building, move to a higher floor, attic or roof. Take essential items with you.
- Do not move through flooded terrain unless absolutely necessary. Be aware of the dangers posed by moving water to people, animals, vehicles, boats, and loose items.
- If forced to walk through water, use a stick to check the depth.
- Stay away from flooded substations, electrical equipment, and cables.
- If in distress, call 112 and make yourself visible.
After a flood
- Return home only when officially permitted.
- Be cautious of the risk of electric shock and other hazards from damaged equipment and contamination. If possible, have an expert inspect your electrical, heating, and water systems.
- Do not consume contaminated food or drinking water. Safe drinking water in emergencies is provided by local authorities. Contact them for help.
- Do not use electrical appliances that have been affected by water damage.
