Evacuation

The government never issues an evacuation order lightly; it is only done in situations where there is an immediate and serious threat to your life and health.

How to prepare for evacuation?

  • If an evacuation order is issued, make sure to follow it immediately!
  • If evacuating independently, use only the officially recommended routes, as these are designated based on actual risk assessments.
  • Ensure you have a place to stay outside the danger zone, such as a holiday home or with relatives or friends.
  • Bring supplies to last for at least one day, ideally three days, per person, based on your needs. Choose ready-to-eat, high-energy, and calorie-rich foods, keeping in mind that there may be no facilities for storing or preparing food at the evacuation location. You must also take any necessary prescription medications, essential documents, cash, a bank card, and a mobile phone with a charger.
  • If you have a relative in a care facility within the danger zone, assist them with evacuation if possible.
  • Government-organised evacuation shelters are primarily intended for those who have no alternative accommodation or temporary place to stay.

In what situations might evacuation be necessary?

A large-scale evacuation may be announced in cases of severe flooding, industrial accidents, air pollution, or the threat of military conflict. This could involve moving thousands of people to a safer location to protect their lives and health.

As part of your personal and family emergency plan, consider in advance how to respond to a long-term crisis. When an evacuation order is issued, there may not be enough time to gather all the necessary supplies. If there is a growing risk that you may need to evacuate from your area, prepare and take essential supplies with you in advance.

What happens if I don't evacuate?

Failing to evacuate could put your life, the lives of your loved ones, and even others in serious danger!

  • Rescue workers, medical staff, and other emergency responders may later have to risk their own safety to save those who did not leave the danger zone in time.
  • The situation in the area could become so hazardous that emergency assistance may no longer be able to reach everyone who needs help.
