Emergency supplies
Think about what supplies you have at home and which ones you need to add. In a crisis, you might not be able to leave your home or rush to the store. Important services like electricity, water, or heating might be interrupted. In these situations, it's important to have enough water, food, and other essentials at home to get by on your own for at least a week.
What supplies you should have?
- Be prepared to manage at home without electricity, water, or heating for at least one week.
- Keep supplies at home based on your needs: water, food, medications, and anything else you may need if the electricity is out. If possible, keep your vehicle's fuel tank at least half full.
- Your emergency supplies don't have to be separate - they can be items you use daily. Make sure you have at least a week's supplies. Check regularly what you already have at home and what you need to purchase extra.
How to plan your home supplies?
- First and foremost, it’s important to ensure that you have enough water, food, and other essential supplies to manage independently for at least one week.
- Consider what it means for you and your family if there is no water, electricity, or heating in your home.
- Water supply is very important! Make sure to have at least one day's of drinking water supply at home (3 litres of drinking water per person per day). Think about where you could get additional drinking water if needed. You can locate the nearest natural water source online from here.
- Ensure that you have enough food at home for your family for at least one week, and keep them in regular rotation. Your food supplies should include items that you typically consume daily. Don’t forget about your pets.
- Choose food that is easy to prepare and has a long shelf life. Also, stock up on food that doesn’t need refrigeration or freezing (like canned goods, soups, dry foods).
Where to store supplies?
Supplies are items you use daily, so they don't need to be stored separately. It's important to have a week's worth of backup, with water, food, and medications kept in regular rotation to prevent anything from spoiling.
What other essential should I have?
- In the absence of electricity, various light sources can be helpful (such as flashlights, candles, lanterns). For cooking, you can use a camping stove, outdoor grill, or other portable cooking equipment. Remember to follow all fire safety regulations!
- Without communication and electricity, it can be very challenging to stay informed about the situation and receive information from the government. For this purpose, use a battery-powered or dynamo radio. Alternatively, you can also use a car radio.
- Make sure that your essential tools can be used even when there is no power. Stock up on batteries, fully charge power banks, or use other alternative energy sources (such as a portable solar panel or generator).
- Think about what devices and tools you have at home that you will need, and identify those that would make your life easier in a crisis situation. Ensure they can be used if an emergency arises.
