Central heating disruption

Determine whether your home heating relies on electricity, natural gas, liquid fuel, or district heating. Try to find alternative heating methods. If you live in an apartment building, assess with your housing association whether it is possible to use alternative heating systems in the building.

How to manage without heating?

  • Make sure you have at least one heating source that is independent of electricity, such as a traditional or gas fireplace, a wood-burning stove, or a cooktop. Ensure that all heating devices are properly maintained and used according to safety regulations.
  • When using a fireplace or stove, only operate it while you are awake, and remember to turn off the heat source before going to sleep.
  • Have at least a week's supply of fuel for both your primary and alternative heating sources. Always follow safety rules when storing fuel!
  • Think about whether you need to drain the water and heating pipes during a heating outage, turn on the circulation, or let water run from the tap to help prevent freezing. Familiarize yourself with how the systems in your home work.
  • To prevent water and heating pipes from freezing, insulate them (using thermal insulation, cloth, or other materials).

Tips to cope with heating disruption?

  • If possible, use a traditional or gas fireplace, a wood-burning stove, or a hob. A generator-powered electric radiator, space heater, or heat pump will also work. Always follow safety guidelines!
  • If you don’t have an alternative heating source, try to stay warm in one room. Turn off forced ventilation, close doors, windows, and ventilation openings, and seal any gaps where warmth might escape.
  • Dress warmly and cover larger windows or glass surfaces with curtains, blinds, thicker fabric, or blankets.
  • Ventilate the room for short periods.
  • If the temperature in other rooms drops low enough to risk freezing the water and heating pipes, insulate the pipes further with cloth. The risk of the water pipes freezing decreases if you let the tap run a little from time to time.
  • If you cannot safely manage during the heating outage, go to relative’s or seek help at the nearest resilience centre. The local council will open resilience centres during emergencies. You can find information about these centres on your local council’s website.
